One of my favorite bands is a band called Ghost. They’re from Sweden and focus on the occult. Ghost consists of five nameless ghouls and their lead singer, Papa Emeritus.
The story behind Ghost is incredible. The nameless ghouls are exactly that, nameless. They where masks which hide their identities. The nameless ghouls have symbols, which helps tell them apart. However, because of the masks, their could be a line up change and fans might not catch it. The symbols are very similar to those used by the Catholic Church, but their reversed to “worship” Satan. These symbols give the ghouls names, as they are also based on the five elements (fire, water, wind, earth, and ether).
There have been three different Papa’s since their first album. Papa wears a papal outfit adorned with an upside down crucifix. Papa also wears a mask made of latex that looks like a skeleton. The cool thing about the three Papa’s is that, their all played by the same guy. The Papa’s have gotten younger with each album release.
A movie that I would recommend is a movie about one of the best franchises of all time. Star Wars. I first watched Star Wars when I was pretty young. The Star Wars films had a huge impact on my life. They helped me explore my imagination and fuel my desire to create. These films hold a special place in my heart, but this recommendation isn’t a review of those legendary films. This film is called Fanboys
Fanboys is a film in which five friends set off on a journey across the country to watch Star Wars Episode 1. That has been their master plan when they were kinds, but growing up Eric, played by Sam Huntington, wants to be more mature and works for his fathers used car dealership. His relationship with the rest of the group has dwindled since graduating high school. Until he learns that one of the members of the group Linus, played by Chris Marquette, is dying of cancer.
This news, coupled with not receiving a promotion at work, inspires him to carryout the gangs old plans. They decide to break into Skywalker Ranch so Linus cab watch Episode 1 before he passes away. Meeting many memorable characters along their journey, the movie is riddled with cameos and references to Star Wars. Members of the original Star Wars trilogy make their way into the movie, providing a hilarious tone to the movies sad plot. Characters from a rival franchise make their way into the movie as well.
If you’re a huge Star Wars fan like I am, you’ll probably like this movie. I can relate a lot to the group of friends in this movie. They remind me of how my group of friends were. The group reminds shows everyone how important Star Wars has become and the family it created.
I absolutely love scary stories. I love that feeling when the hair on your neck stands up and you feel that small amount of unnatural anxiety. One of my favorite books just so happens to be filled with scary stories. When I was first learning about the horror genre, there was a book that was in my schools library filled with scary stories. This book was called Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark by Alvin Schwartz.
These books haunted my dreams for a long time after I read them. Inside the book, were nightmarish illustrations by Stephen Gammell. Stephen Gammell does the illustrations for all three books. Disgusting and contorted figures helped the me imagine the story clearly. The vivid imagery helped make these books become very sought after at my school. When I was finally able to get my hands on a copy, I couldn’t put it down. I used to dare myself to try and read as many stories as I could before getting too creeped out.
The stores that Schwartz put together are terrifying. One of my favorite stories is about a scarecrow named Harold. Harold was abused by his owners and he seeks his revenge. This story in particular gave me nightmares. I would also like to recommend reading The Thing and The Dead Man’s Brains.
I recently found a copy of the Scary Stories Treasury. This book is a collection of all three Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books. Alvin Schwartztook many real folk tales and added his own style to them. Schwartz was inspired by many different works ranging from William Shakespeare to Mary Shelley.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a great collection of short horror stories. They’ll infest your dreams and haunt you while you’re awake. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants a good scare. You might also want to leave the lights on.
I used to read a lot when I was younger. My grandmother was very into reading and got me into it. When I had to read for school my grandmother was so excited. For 30 minutes a day, we would read our books together. She would always catch me when I had “accidentally” fallen asleep. She was someone that really inspired me to use my imagination. Without her constantly pushing me I wouldn’t be the person I am today. If I was interested in a book, she would immediately pick it up for me to read. My interest in story telling and creating stories wouldn’t be the same without her.
During those reading sessions is where I found some of my favorite books (I will include links to the books if you’re interested):
The Cirque Du Freak series: This series is heart wrenching and very enjoyable. The main character Darren and his best friend Steve go to an underground circus. They see many horrors there, but one stands out. For Darren a spider named Madam Octa that is controlled by a small flute. For Darren’s best friend Steve it is the tall familiar figure holding the flute.
The Demonata series: Having been written by the same author as Cirque Du Freak I was ready to have my heart broken. However, this series is more disturbing and terrifying. For Grubbs Grady (not the best name), life becomes a literal living hell.
A Series of Unfortunate Events series: This series was the start of my interest in reading. From the first book “The Bad Beginning” I was immediately hooked. Each book follows the story of the Baudelaire children and their means to escape the deadly Count Olaf.
All Quiet on the Western Front: I had to read this for my ninth grade English honors class. From the second I picked up this sad book, I couldn’t put it down. It’s a great book that allows you the chance to feel the horrors of war.
I recommend reading these books. They have definitely inspired me. While these books are mostly horror and sad, they’re still wonderful reads.
Inspiration can be found all throughout this world. However, inspiration alone cannot create new life. Action and repetitious work is needed. It’s very troubling to read “there are lots of bad writers” as I sit here dreaming of becoming a writer. What if I fall under this curse? To be doomed before I can even begin is torture.
On Writing A Memoir of the Craftby Stephen King, not only lays out the life of one of the most popular authors of our time, but gives ideas and instructions on how to improve your writing technique. Right out the gate King, drops the first dose of reality. Writing is not for everyone.
The one thing that any aspiring author should be doing, according to King, is reading. Fueling the brain train with stories strengthens your core writing abilities. Discovering new methods of writing by reading can help impact the thoughts stewing in your head. Understanding how your target audience can help with the success of your story. Since our cultures are constantly changing, you as an writer might have to do some tweaking yourself. Throughout King’s chapter on reading, the sheer bluntness of his words might dissuade someone from writing. But that is just not the case. He’s imploring you to read as often as you can in order to achieve the goals you want.
Now reading isn’t the only weapon in your arsenal of progress. You have the opportunity to achieve greatness through practice. Practice always makes perfect. King says that his practice schedule is to read and write for “four to six hours a day, everyday”. He understands life happens, but if you really want to do well, it needs to be done. King takes no excuses.
What sticks out to me the most about On Writing is that, writing is an art. You can’t become the next King over night. Practicing grammar, vocabulary, and structure you have to put all of your might for the purpose of fun. That feeling in your stomach when you know you’ve done something amazing. Writing for money is something that King sees as a waste of time. Never use your talents for evil. Never use your passion and patience to snuff out the flame.
